New Meds: Day 1 Mercaptopurine and the Last Day
Hi everyone I hope you are all having a great IBD free day. As you probably gather my the title of this blog my first day of taking mercaptopurine didn't go very well.
On Tuesday night at about 7pm I took my 25mg dose of mercaptopurine and 15 minutes after taking the tablet I had developed hives (a raised, itchy rash that appears on the skin) on my right arm and my whole body was itchy. As soon as the rash appeared I thought the first thing I need to do is take an antihistamine but of course I didn't have any in the house so I had to get my mum to go Asda to some Piriton (antihistamine). Thankfully after I took a dose of Piriton the itching stopped and the rash disappear so I didn't bother phoning NHS 24 (out of hours service) because I thought what is the point the rash has gone away and I felt fine.
During the night I woke up with extremely bad joint pain in my ankles and knees but I thought I had just lay wrong so I went back to sleep. The following morning I woke up at 7.30am and still had really sore ankles and knees and when I tried to put weight on them it made the pain even worse so I got up and took some paracetmol and decided that I should leave a message for the IBD nurse so she could phone me back as soon as possible. To my suprise when I phoned to leave a message one of the IBD nurses anwsered the phone, so I explained all the problems I was having and she said I was having an allergic reaction to the tablets and that I should take an antihistamine until the reaction settled down. So for the rest of the day I took Piriton every 4 hours and thankfully today I have stop displaying any sypmtoms.
